Something is wrong…

As I was driving to work this morning I realised that there is something fundamentally wrong in the UK at the moment. At 7.30am all roads from my house to work (it took 45 minutes for a 24 mile journey) were packed. Queues on the motorway, queues getting off the motorway, queues to get into the car park.

No one who I work with lives in the same town as the office. No one can walk to work. The distance some people are prepared to drive to get to work amazes me - I have one of the shorter commuting times! According to the National Travel Survey of 2005:

“…the average trip length rose by 6 per cent and the average trip time increased by 13 per cent.”

and with the cost of housing in the UK set to increase even more the chances are that people will be living even further away from where they work so they can afford even a starter home.

With so many people commuting longer distances for a larger amount of time, there should be a huge cry for better public transport. As I mentioned in a previous post, it would take me more than twice as long to get to work if I didn’t drive - nevermind the extra cost. Yet according to the National Travel Survey:

“In 2005, car travel accounted for four-fifths of the total distance travelled; this has remained fairly stable since 1995/1997.”

Something obviously has to change.
