Daily commute

Recently I have been looking into replacing my car, but what with all the Media and government hype regarding the environment and public transport, it seemed like a perfect opportunity to change my way of life and do my bit for the environment.

Luckily, my 17-mile journey to work is on a main line and contains about 6 stops, with a connecting bus at the other end to my office. So I went straight ahead and rang the Rail company and discussed the prices.

My journey costs £7.30 to travel on a daily basis, £6.78 based on a weekly ticket and £5.91 per day (£130.20pm for 22 days) for a monthly ticket.

The connecting bus which costs £1 each way, £1.50 return or £8 for a week (£1.60), makes the cheapest daily cost of commuting via public transport:

£7.41

This is a little steep, far cheaper than what I’m already paying. Let me elaborate:
I currently drive my turbo charged luxury saloon to the office the 17 miles door to door at a cost per mile (including depreciation, servicing, petrol, etc) of 17.2p per mile, making the daily cost:

£5.84

So where is the advantage of using the British public transport system? Here’s more:
According to “www.whatprice.co.uk” if I drove a Renault Clio 1.2 into work, the cost would be 8.2p per mile based on 12,000 miles per year. This would make the daily cost:

£2.75

To summarise, for more inconvenience, longer journey times, reduced comfort and relatively regular delays/interruptions, I would be paying a potential extra of £1230.24 per year; this, co-incidentally, is the price of a good second hand car. (£4.66 per day, £23.30 per week, £102.52 per month)

So considering the government are attempting to get people off the roads and reducing pollution, what are they doing to make public transport better value for money?

Ditto! I’ve also tried riding my bike to work, but there is little or no provision for cyclists on Englands roads! Like running the gauntlet. Keep up the good work.

[...] Where is the incentive to use more ecological transport solution? Clearly as this site proves in most examples so far, it is far cheaper to travel using a car. Go to Daily commute, Not just by car, how about a rocket? or UK rail fare’s third highest in Europe to see why. [...]
