British Pulic Transport Debate

What is wrong with the UK Public Transport System?

It is commonly accepted that the public in the United Kingdom should be using their cars more infrequently and transferring to ecologically sound methods of transport, but those who attempt to do so are punnished by the unreasonably high costs of the widely criticised British public transport system. This site has been created to debate and discuss what the alternatives are, and why is it nearly always "Cheaper By Car".

Case Studies

Some visitors have sent us in examples of their situations and it is evident that there is no financial advantage to stopping using our cars, aside from the comfort and convenience advantages. Ian Knight wrote to us with the following. Check out the video, it really is enlightening.
Let’s face it public transport does little or nothing for the UK economy as it is not exportable, other than flying or ferries. And is little more that job creation for public transport employees, and another TAX on the […]

More carrots than sticks…

Silvia Vousden wrote into us with the following:
There should be more carrots than sticks.
I have often wondered why commuting has always been considered a personal cost. What about ‘contract carriage’ of employees on public transport, where employers could enter into a contract with public transport operators, community transport schemes and taxis or minicabs to […]

Cheaper By Plane!

After several hours of research, I just booked a weekend break to Paris. Ideally I wanted to go with the Euro Star, I’d never been through the tunnel before and of course the ecological damage is relatively small in comparison to a Boeing. Beleive it or not, it was around £40 more expensive […]

What is the world coming to?

Front-page news today - Train prices have gone up again!
Looks like it’s now cheaper to fly than get the train.  The most ecologically sound method of transport, the train, remains more uncomfortable, busier than ever and above all, far more expensive.
According to the front page of the independent:
Planes, trains, and the road to ruin […]

M1 Widening?

The debate over the widening of the M1 is far greater than I’d imagined! After hearing a news article on the radio last week, I’ve been investigating it ever since. One site in particular was of interest: www.nowideningm1.org.uk, who are attempting to publicise the recently begun widening of the M1 at a preposterously […]

Climate Change will cost trillions!

Quote:
Climate change could shrink the global economy by a fifth at a cost of up to £3.68 trillion unless drastic action is taken; a government-sponsored review is to warn.

Can road pricing pay for improved public transport?

So discourage road use, why doesn’t the government charge for the use of the road and pass that money back into the public transport infrastructure?

Too Many Cars

Why are there so many cars on Britain’s roads? As soon as there is any kind of problem, an accident or a broken down vehicle, this fact becomes dreadfully apparent.

This morning there were 5 accidents on the A1 in Hertfordshire, including a three litre engine blocking one of the lanes if you can believe that. My journey takes me from junction 9 to junction 4 (17 miles), this took me 2 entire hours, so that was less than 10 miles an hour.
